Tampa Bay Rays
Evan Longoria #3
Tampa Bay Rays third baseman Evan Longoria has been a long-time nemesis of the New York Yankees. That didn’t change in this game. It was Longoria’s double that sparked the team and put the Rays up 1-0 in the top of the first at Yankee Stadium. Then, in the fourth inning, facing Yankees reliever Luis Cessa with the bases loaded, two outs, and the score 5-1 Rays, it was Longoria again who delivered the crushing blow to the Yankees with his second extra-base hit of the game, a double to the right-center-field wall just out of the reach of 6-foot7 Yankees right fielder Aaron Judge for a standup double, clearing the bases and opening up the score to an 8-1 Rays lead. The Rays never looked back, as they won handily, 12-3, in front of 41,473 fans.
QUOTE: “It’s just a place I feel comfortable hitting. I don’t know what it is, but I just like playing here,” Longoria said, about his hitting success in new Yankee Stadium.
FACT: Longoria has the most hits (74) and most runs (47) for visiting players at new Yankee Stadium, which opened in 2009.
