Yadier Molina #4

St. Louis Cardinals All-Star catcher Yadier Molina took one for the team – literally. After being shut out for six innings by Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Cody Reed and another two innings by relievers Jumbo Diaz and Blake Wood, the Cardinals, trailing 4-0 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning at Busch Stadium, mounted an improbable comeback by scoring five runs, all with two outs, to win 5-4. The Cardinals ended up winning the epic game in the oddest of ways. Just prior to Molina’s walk-off at-bat, Cardinals first baseman Brandon Moss coaxed a walk from Reds reliever Ross Ohlendorf to tie the game, then Ohlendorf promptly plunked Molina in the rib cage on a 1-0 count for a walk-off hit-by-pitch Cardinals win.

QUOTE: “Do we have a lot of ice?” Molina said, with his first words to Cardinals manager Mike Matheny after getting hit in the ribs for the walk-off hit-by-pitch.

FACT: Molina represented the St. Louis Cardinals in seven consecutive All-Star games from 2009-2015.
