Ryan Howard #6
Before the game, the Philadelphia Phillies inducted Jim Thome into the club’s Wall of Fame at Citizens Bank Ballpark. During the game, the player that took over for Thome in 2005 made a statement that he would also like to be included on the club’s Wall of Fame someday. That player is Phillies first baseman Ryan Howard. In the bottom of the fifth inning with the score tied 3-3 with the Colorado Rockies and Thome looking on, Howard crushed a 95-mph fastball on a 1-0 pitch from Rockies pitcher Jon Gray into the Rockies’ bullpen for a grand slam, his 17th homer of the season. Howard ended the day knocking in five runs in the 10-6 Phillies victory.
QUOTE: “You want to go out there and try to get a win on a special night like this,” Howard said, referring to the induction of Thome into the club’s Wall of Fame.
FACT: Howard won the National League MVP in 2006, led the NL in home runs in 2006 (58) and 2008 (48), and led the NL in RBIs in 2006 (149), 2008 (146), and 2009 (141).
