Christian Yelich #21
With two outs in the ninth inning and runners on first and second, the Miami Marlins were clinging to a precarious 5-4 lead over the visiting Chicago White Sox at Marlins Park. On a 1-1 pitch from Miami closer Fernando Rodney, Chicago second baseman Tyler Saladino hit a sharp single to Miami left fielder Christian Yelich. White Sox third-base coach Joe McEwing sent Carlos Sanchez home to score the tying run. Yelich made a clutch pin-point accurate throw to catcher Jeff Mathis to nab Sanchez at home for the third out ending the game, and preserving a Marlins’ 5-4 win.
“I knew I had some time to make a good throw. [Catcher] Jeff [Mathis] made a hell of a play making the catch and putting the tag on him. It was a big one for us,” Yelich said.
“Take that chance every time. Give us an opportunity to tie the game, and get right back in it,” McEwing said.
FACT: Yelich won the National League Gold Glove Award for left field in 2014.
