Kyle Hendricks #28
With two thirds of the season completed, Chicago Cubs pitcher Kyle Hendricks is making a strong bid to win the National League Cy Young award - from the slot as a fifth starter. Hendricks masterfully scattered seven hits, struck out five, and walked three to record a complete game shutout against the Miami Marlins for his 10th win of the season. Hendricks' stingy 2.22 ERA is second best in the NL. Only one pitcher, Clayton Kershaw of the Los Angeles Dodgers, has a lower ERA (1.79). Hendricks added an offensive spark with a RBI single in the Cubs 5-0 win at Wrigley Field.
QUOTE: "He's a humble man, he does his work, he's a great team player. He's just a joy to be around and then he goes and does that. With good health, he'll continue to do that for a while," Cubs manager Joe Maddon said about Hendricks.
FACT: Hendricks retired Ichiro Suzuki (2,998 hits) on a line drive double play. Stan Musial is the only player to record his 3,000th hit at Wrigley Field.
