Rob Whalen #63
After a 36-pitch, four-run first inning, Atlanta Braves rookie pitcher Rob Whalen settled down in his Major League Baseball debut by blanking the Pittsburgh Pirates over the next four innings at Turner Field. Whalen's first strikeout was Jeff Locke. Down 4-0 early, the Braves fought back to win the game 8-4, of which they lead 5-4 after Whalen?s five innings of work, allowing him to be in line for the win in his MLB debut.
QUOTE: "He's probably a hitter away in the first inning from leaving the ballgame, and he ended up getting the win. They say he battles and competes, and he sure did that," Braves manager Brian Snitker said of Whalen.
FACT: After giving up three hits, walking two batters, hitting a batter, and throwing a wild pitch in the first inning, Whalen only gave up one more hit over the next four innings, and retired nine of the final 10 batters he faced.
